Secrets... if they can be told in actual confidence without damaging a friendship then it is possibly time to spill the beans. Of course the criteria for "Actual Confidence" tends to become more regimented as you get older.

But there are other types of secrets that should be told in other situations. And those are the ones that I shall keep to myself. As it looks like the Master Dragon is doing.

The creators of the Hero Games play as horde. Back in my Wow hayday I would have loved that to death.

I still think it's pretty cool.

Hello everyone. I'm posting here first in order to follow forum directions. Because I always follow directions. And take dictation and stuff. Good Bards do that you know.

So... how's it going? (you see that? That was totally an opening line of social elliquence that has completely won your mind and heart. Just take my word for it.)

And with the pleasantries out of the way... has anyone heard any good gossip? Inquiring minds need to know. Seriously, it's like a physical need. I have medical documents that prove it. Conclusively.

I just read this quote in a business book. It mentions Warriors, but I think it's equally applicable to any class. Don Juan in A Separate Peace, by Carlos Castaneda, says: "The difference between a warrior and an ordinary man is that a warrior sees everything as a challenge, while an ordinary man sees everything as either a blessing or a curse."

We are all "blessed" and "cursed" many times during our lives; those tend to cancel out and there isn't much we can do about them. The difference in our lives comes from the personal responsibility we accept - the challenges we take on - and what we do to fulfill those challenges and that responsibility.

Hmm, school-wide assignments should not show up at all before your first mission has been graded. That would be an oversight on my part. In the meantime, the Famous Adventurer has received your (lucasjung's) school-wide assignment and graded it. Did you resubmit it after your first mission was graded?

No one except me. Imo, books are supposed to teach you at least something. The Chronicles had ONE useful thing - if you search a room, take out the drawers and look under them. That's it, for however many pages it had. It was just horrible stretched out and really went nowhere. Sure, the story went full circle, but there was no real point in it all, he just kept tacking stuff on. I don't dislike Zelazny, I dislike The Chronicles specifically. Though I do admit that I read them at a point where everything I *could* have learned from them was already introduced to me elsewhere. Really though, it had nothing quite unique about it. Then again, I can say that for a LOT of fantasy books.

I have this thing about people writing books only if they have something to write about. In other words, I don't respect smooth prose and clever dialog alone, there has to be some substance. This is my problem with the series. His other works don't share this flaw, at least not nearly to such a degree.

"Mary Sue" also comes in mind, in reference to just about every character.

The sword buckled slightly in reaction to the stranger’s authenticity.
Robert felt foolish. Sir Orrin appeared sincere. The offerings were something sacred. Robert remembered his meeting with Lady Erana and the other paladins in the tribunal hall – his Day of Judgment and Knighthood. A gift from Lady Erana was not something to give away freely. He wondered if these offerings were truly from the Gardens. If they were, this new student was well traveled.

There was much to think about. Corvus had some rather incongruent information about the children. Robert was relieved they were safe, but disturbed to hear they were apparently happy. Their parents were dead by some unknown plague or magic – or both. The thought made him shiver.

Robert looked down at Orrin still holding out his offering and still smiling. Robert lowered and sheathed his weapon. He stared quietly and thought.

“I must apologize. I can see now that your arrival was more good timing than mere convenience. I must decline your offering, however. If the water is what I think it is, than it should be kept for use in much worse situations than a broken arm. I would accept some help adjusting this splint.

My name is Robert, paladin knight protector of the Book of Justice so named, from the frozen Heeland of Vespucciland. My companions and I are here on Piperi to investigate the strange affliction that has killed the adults on the island. We thought the island was under a strict quarantine, yet we found you here – which is fortunate since we could use the help.

I suggest, though it might be unwise, we split up to cover more ground. We should go attend the children and question them, but it behooves us to search the lighthouse and find this Wise Woman. We can reconvene at the caves at midday. “

Robert looked up at the ominous cloud ring above the island while he awaited the others answers. The clouds seemed thicker now than they did last night.

Orrin awakens to a sword pointed in his direction. " I suppose you are right," he says sleepily as he sits up, "I am Orrin and hail from Willowsby. I am a student like the rest of you. I came here seeking the Wise Woman. I was watching the sunset, when I saw the smoke and flame."

Orrin grabs his backpack and begins to rifle through it. He pulls forth a bottle containing an effervescent clear liquid and two large burgundy colored fruits.

"Here," he offers the bottle to Robert,"that is water from Lady Erana's garden as well as the fruit from the tree she had planted there. The water should help to heal that viscious bite and help you regain some vigor."

Orrin looks over to see Samantha rubbing the sleep from her eyes. He tosses one of the fruits to her. Orrin stands and offers a hand to Robert. " And you are? "

*Corvus emerges from the treeline, and is surprised to see Robert questioning Orrin. Surprised, but makes no effort to interfere with it. The newcomer does have some explaining to do... Umbra bounces over to greet Corvus as the morning light increases, though he seems tired as he has been trouncing through the forest for several hours. He gathers the members of the group that are not sleeping together to deliver his "reconaissance report".

"The island has a lot of pine forest, and some holly up in the cliffs. There are quite a lot of seals about on the beaches as well. Up the beach I found a small lighthouse about a mile away from here, but the light was not lit, and I didn't approach it. Down the beach I found a seemingly extensive cave system. I spelunked in for a ways with a torch, but eventually found several forks and decided to backtrack before I became disoriented."

*Umbra's ears perk up at a distant sound. She darts off into the treeline as Corvus looks confused and a little angry. He bolts off after her, but cannot keep up. The dog strikes out into the center of the island towards the sound and eventually discovers a small enclave of the island's children, many of them sleeping at this early hour. The overly friendly dog barks to announce herself, then fearlessly trots up and is soon greeted with many friendly hands patting and petting her. Corvus arrives some time later out of breath to find Umbra happily basking in the attention from the dozen or so children. He sighs, greets the children and quicly introduces himself, then trudges back to the group to share his discovery, leaving Umbra with the kids.*

"There is a small group of children not far from here... sheltered together inside of a house. We should probably go see if they have any more details about what is going on here. I, however, am going to get some rest... it has been a long night."

*With that, Corvus finds a shady spot and clears out a nice place to nap for a few hours.*

Samantha was curled up near Corvus, smiling in her sleep. She seemed to be dreaming about something pleasant...

~

She stood on a cliff overlooking the Med Sea, bathed in moonlight. The wind blew in her face, causing her hair to flow back. Her robes looked like part of the night sky wrapped around her, the silver stars reflecting the moon.

She was ready for freedom, and she had it. Soon, she might be back in Mordavia, or in Spielburg, or Shapier - wherever there was heroism to do. And she would not be alone, for-

"Samantha..."

The scene faded, and all that was left was the voice.

"You are in great danger, and without either of your guardians. There is evil on Piperi that is too strong for you. Your protectors may be small, but they will be useful. They could even save your life. For your own sake, do not attempt this task alone."

She stirred. What the heck was that?

Gradually, she became aware of her surroundings again. In the pale gray light of the predawn hour, she could see Robert questioning Orrin while Dyrim and Corvus continued to rest nearby.

She remained puzzled by the voice that interrupted her dream. Who was that? Why did it want to protect her? What did it mean "alone"? Didn't she have her fellow students? And who were the guardians?

The aura faded and Robert deftly got to his feet. The beach was quiet. His companions stirred, restlessly in and out of sleep. The sun was still not up - early morning now. Umbra sat next to her master and looked at Robert. He whispered a silent “Shush” to her.

Sir Orrin rustled some, but his chest rose and fell telling Robert he was still sleeping. Robert brandished his sword and stood over the stranger and kicked him hard in his boot.

“Get up! We should have had this conversation last night after the excitement, but we are having it now. Who are you and what are you doing on Piperi? Talk!”

Robert could not attest to knowing everybody at the School, but he was good with faces and Orrin’s he did not recognize. Sir Orrin’s arrival during the battle seemed a little too convenient last night. They needed to reorganize after the attack yesterday, which meant they had to trust this new member of their group.

If you are looking for something active and good for the community, I suggest volunteering with your local CKI or (if you are looking for a bigger commitment) Boys and Girls Club.

In college, I was very active with my with CKI and did a lot of community service through my lacrosse team too.

http://slp.kiwanis.org/CircleK/home.aspx

If those don't float your boat, check the student activity website of your local college or university for ideas. Many clubs on college campuses are open to people not affiliated with the school; or they can point you in the direction to find a local chapter you can join.

I know it doesn't meet your 30 min to an hour requirement, but it will definitely be rewarding! Good luck finding something.

As for my own favorites, I might start with Robert A. Heinlein: Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, Glory Road, Citizen of the Galaxy, Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land.

I was influenced by Ayn Rand: Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead in particular. Atlas Shrugged is slow slogging for the first 50 to 100 pages; once I got past their (on my second try), I read the next 1000 in 2 days - called in sick to work to get a few hours of sleep, then finish it. Since then I've become more cynical about its message, but at the time it was a life-changing book for me.

A couple trilogies stand out: Lord of the Rings (but read The Hobbit first) and Isaac Asimov's original Foundation trilogy.

More recently, Mind Set: The New Psychology of Success, by Carol S. Dweck, is on the top of my "Heroes must read" list.

48 Laws of Power is a very interesting book. I'm not sure I actually finished it, think it might have gotten misplaced somewhere. But what I read was thought-provoking. It has zillions of historical examples illustrating his "rules" for how to obtain and hold power... and how to lose it.

I rather enjoyed the original Amber series; I got lost in the later ones, probably because of not rereading them all in a string. It didn't hurt that the protagonist is sometimes called "Corey" (his real name being Corwin). But the idea of visiting parallel worlds, and a few exceptional individuals being able to cross to them via the Pattern, was interesting. I hear the diceless Amber RPG is fun to play.

Snow Crash is highly influential; a lot of modern MUD's and MMO's were inspired by it. It's my favorite of Neal Stephenson's books, but all of his books are enjoyable.

"Amber chronicles,by Roger Zelazny"

I hate you. I read ALL of his books because he was the inspiration for the Nameless One. None of them ever compared, at all. "This Immortal" was alright, but The Chronicles of Amber? I have no idea why I finished those books. Sure, the first fourth of the first book was interesting, but other than that, it was drawn out s**t. I did like some of the characters, being based on ideals of time periods and all, but other than that, it was completely empty.

"The Prince, by Niccolò Machiavelli

The 48 Laws of Power, by Robert Greene

Black Hawk Down, by Mark Bowden

Neuromancer, by William Gibson"

Read Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, The Art of War, and The Book of Five Rings. I will check out the 48 laws, have never heard of it before.

This is mainly a question for Corey and Lori: Did you guess ever think of programming a game without the backing of any company? Isn't it much easier with all the open source engines and such now? Sure, it would look dated, but I think it could still sell. People would take you guys seriously considering your work experience, so I am sure you guys could get a lot of other people on board.

Where are you from and what do you drive? There are decent roads just about anywhere, as long as you go far enough out of a city. The best ones are usually along some river if you aren't lucky enough to live next to mountain passes.

Driving close to the limit is about the only time, other than sparring, where I completely lose myself in the moment. It's quite an amazing feeling, pretty rare too.

There are lots of good books out there. It's hard to pick just a few. I enjoyed Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, and Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. Also, like Amairis, I like Tamora Pierce's books.

(And haven't completely read Harry Potter. )

Greetings, ShiningDrake. I'm Samantha, Initiate-level wizard and unofficial <strike>rogue</strike> "bard". It's nice to see some new people around here.

Every class shares traits with other classes. For instance, paladins have similarities to both warriors and wizards, while wizards are like <strike>rogues</strike> "bards" in some ways, and paladins in others. Many students' second highest classes are the classes that are closest to their own. You are a paladin with high wizard points, while I am a wizard with high <strike>rogue</strike> "bard" points.

Anyway, I'm glad to meet you. Good luck on your missions, and keep an eye on your purse around any suspicious-seeming bards.

I recently joined the school as a wizard. It being paladin month, the "Simple Acts" mission is available to all students right now. I was genuinely excited by this assignment and so decided to work on it first, before my "First Wizard Mission." After writing up ten simple things I submitted my answer. However, when I clicked on the "submitted" button under assignments, the assignment didn't show up there.

I thought, "Hey, maybe the system won't let me submit any other assignments until I've submitted my first wizard assignment." So I wrote up that assignment and submitted it. That assignment now appears under my list of submitted assignments. Great! Next I went back and tried re-submitting the paladin assignment. No dice: it still doesn't show up under my list of submitted assignments.

Maybe I can't submit anything else until my first assignment is graded and moves to the "completed" section. If so, I hope it gets graded in the next two days so that I can submit the paladin assignment before it goes away at the end of the month.

I would also recommend one of two changes:
Preferably, let students submit optional and school-wide assignments even if they haven't completed their first Class assignments.
If that isn't an acceptable option, make it very clear to new students that they will not be able to submit anything else until their first Class assignments have been submitted and graded.

I actually already mentioned it in my introduction topic, but if I could double major, my second would most certainly be Wizard. I've always been told that I'm rather intelligent (No matter how much my lack self-esteem makes me feel whenever I screw up...)and always done well in school... Not to mention that magic is AWESOME. ... <.< >.> *cough*
